If you are new to the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), the language in your plan can feel like a lot to take in. One of the first terms you will come across is “Core Supports.” This is often the largest part of a plan and the funding many people use most in their everyday lives. In this guide, we explain Core Supports in plain terms, share everyday examples, and point you to where you can confirm the details for your own situation.

This article is general information only. It is not financial, medical or legal advice. Your own plan is the source of truth for what your funding can be used for, so always check it and speak with your planner, Local Area Coordinator (LAC) or support coordinator if you are unsure.

What are Core Supports?

Core Supports help you with everyday activities and work towards your goals. They are usually the most flexible part of an NDIS plan and are designed to assist with the ordinary tasks of daily living, getting out into the community, and the consumable items you may need along the way.

The NDIS generally groups Core Supports into four areas:

  • Assistance with Daily Life
  • Assistance with Social, Economic and Community Participation
  • Consumables
  • Transport

Let’s look at each one and the kinds of everyday supports it can cover.

Assistance with Daily Life

This is support to help you live as independently as possible at home. It can include help around the house and support with personal routines.

Everyday examples include:

  • Household tasks such as cleaning, laundry, changing bed linen, washing up and general tidying that you find difficult to manage on your own. You can read more on our household tasks page.
  • Personal care and activities such as support with showering, dressing, grooming, toileting and getting ready for the day. Our personal care page explains how this can be delivered respectfully and on your terms.

The aim is to take some pressure off the tasks that are harder for you, so you can put your energy where it matters most.

Assistance with Social, Economic and Community Participation

This support helps you take part in activities outside the home, connect with others and build skills and confidence in your community.

Everyday examples include:

  • Support to attend a community group, class, hobby or local event
  • A support worker accompanying you to social outings or recreational activities
  • Help to build the skills and confidence to participate more independently over time

You can see how this works in practice on our community participation page. For many people, this is the part of their plan that helps them feel more included and connected.

Consumables

Consumables are everyday items you may need because of your disability. These are generally lower-cost, regularly used products.

Depending on your needs and what is set out in your plan, this can include items such as continence products, certain low-cost assistive items, or other consumables identified as reasonable and necessary. Because what is appropriate varies so much from person to person, it is best to confirm the specifics with your planner or support coordinator rather than assuming an item is covered.

Transport

Transport funding can help where your disability makes it difficult to use public transport or travel independently, so you can get to the activities and appointments that matter to you.

Everyday examples include:

  • Getting to and from community activities, social outings or appointments
  • Support to travel safely when public transport is not a practical option

Our travel and transport page outlines how this support can be arranged. It is worth noting that transport funding and how it is provided can work differently from one plan to the next, so checking your own plan is important.

How flexible is Core Supports funding?

One of the helpful things about Core Supports is that, in general, the funding is flexible. For many people, funding within Core can be used across the different Core categories as needed, rather than being locked to a single line item. That flexibility can make it easier to adjust as your week or your needs change.

However, flexibility is not unlimited and there can be exceptions, such as transport funding or any amounts that are stated in your plan for a specific purpose. The way your plan is managed (self-managed, plan-managed or NDIA-managed) can also affect how you use your funding day to day.

Because the rules can change and every plan is different, the safest approach is to:

  • Read your own NDIS plan carefully
  • Check questions with your planner, LAC or support coordinator
  • Visit ndis.gov.au for the current official information

Putting it together: an everyday picture

Imagine a typical week. You might have a support worker help with showering and getting dressed in the mornings (Assistance with Daily Life), a hand with the vacuuming and laundry once a week (household tasks), support to attend a local art class on Thursday (community participation), and assistance getting there and back (transport). That blend of supports, drawn from your Core funding, is what helps many people live the week they want to live.

What that looks like for you will depend entirely on your goals and your plan. There is no single “right” mix, and a good provider will work with you to shape supports around your preferences.
